For the ADG-1 SE Asheville Music Tools added an additional delay bucket for over 1.1 seconds of total delay time with modulation. In addition to the extended delay time, the extra bucket improves delay bandwidth at longer times compared to the standard ADG-1.

As the clock time increases in an analog delay, high frequencies are naturally rolled off. On the standard ADG-1 this starts to be prominent at around 500ms and longer. In the ADG-1 SE rolloff begins to occur around 700ms. Therefore, the ADG-1 SE will have noticeably brighter repeats in the 500-700ms range than the standard ADG-1.

Delay Loop Insert

By tapping into the signal path between the delay line and the tone control, the ADG-1 SE offers a way to further alter your delay tone without affecting the dry tone. Many ideas are possible here. You can incorporate simple changes like expanded filtering or phased/flanged repeats, or you can go wild with fuzz and runaway pitch bending effects. Octave pedals are especially fun: each repeat goes increasingly up or down in octave as they are processed through the delay line again and again. Adding drive or fuzz will lead to extra intense self-oscillation effects.

Unlike many insert loops, this insert will affect the first repeat and all subsequent ones, exactly as in some of Hawker’s other famous delays. The entire signal chain utilizes premium audio-grade op amps and high-tolerance, non-microphonic capacitors to guarantee high performance, temperature stability, and low noise.

We began with a classic delay architecture using a pair of studio grade Xvive™ MN3005 reissue Bucket Brigade Devices (BBDs) and a high voltage step-up power supply for maximum headroom. We implemented a tightly calibrated vintage-style compander and incredibly deep, discrete transistor, 5th-order anti-aliasing and reconstruction filters to provide a familiar character with superior clarity, noise reduction and dynamic feel. Our feedback circuit uses a voltage-controlled transconductance amplifier, which provides Hawker’s classic feedback tone while offering the most accurate method for dialing in infinite repeats without runaway or for achieving total feedback overload.

The input preamplifier is critical to the sound of any analog effect. A discrete, high impedance, JFET input stage provides consistent operation across all sound sources and can be used as an always-on buffer. The preamplifier and drive circuit can be used to overdrive the delay line and mixer section for unique artifacts and character that only an analog delay can provide.

We spared no opportunity for flexible control while maintaining a completely analog circuit. The clock generation, modulation oscillator, and even the switching logic are all fully analog in nature. Our clock VCO, with temperature compensated exponentiator, drives the BBDs at extremely high current to eliminate artifacts and provide for a clearer sound. An assignable Expression/CV input expands the flexibility to the limits of user creativity: use an expression pedal to warp the delay time, swell in self-oscillating feedback, or add a modulated vibrato flourish in real time.

An effect of this complexity depends entirely on its power supply and input protection. We took every measure possible to eliminate sources of noise and radio frequency interference (RFI/EMI), as well as protect from electrostatic discharge (ESD) spikes to ensure carefree operation in any studio or performance environment. Our step-up high voltage power supply operates in the MHz range, well beyond the audio band and most other pedals. All voltage sources are highly filtered to eliminate noise and crosstalk between the BBD clock, LFO, and other sections with a multi layer PCB utilizing dedicated split power and ground planes. The power input is fully protected from reverse polarity and over-voltage conditions.

Key Features:

100% Analog signal path

Switchable true bypass or JFET-buffered bypass with switchable trails

Power: 9VDC @ <150mA (85mA Nominal, up to 250mA start up.)

Expression / CV input assignable to Time, Feedback, Mod Amount, or Mod Rate (CV range is 0-5V). The ACV-1 consists of a modulated BBD delay line with a flexible supporting cast of synthesizer-inspired controls. On the surface, the ACV-1 is simply a highly tweakable classic chorus. In reality, it is a veritable powerhouse of time warping modulation effects: shimmering comb filter swirls, luscious true pitch vibrato, glitchy textures, ringing metallic pipe tones, and even a faux reverb.

This astounding analog modulator was engineered by Hawker to deliver the ultimate time warping experience. With a bit of a mind flip, you’ll be into the time slip—and nothing will ever be the same!

What makes the ACV-1 special?

At the heart of every chorus is a short delay whose time is modulated by a low frequency oscillator (LFO). The ACV-1 uses a 1024-stage X-Vive™ high-voltage MN3007 BBD chip for its delay line. Mixing that delay back in with the original signal produces the familiar, lush sound of chorused voices in unison.

Many choruses keep the delay time fixed, but our Time knob lets you warp through the decades of chorus. Start in the middle for a tight 70’s-style chorus. Go longer for a drippy 80’s chorus and a warm slap delay, or go shorter for flanging tones.

Another uncommon addition is our Feedback knob with phase options. This lets you deepen the chorus effect and explore more exotic metallic or vocal sounds. At high feedback settings you can use the Time knob to dial in peaks and notches for resonant sounds, like a pipe or a bell. The Tone control changes the frequency response of the feedback loop to make your chorus more shimmery, or more dark and haunting. Utilizing the phase switch you can produce hollow, deep vocal sounds akin to a talk box.

Our LFO includes multiple waveforms: triangle for classic chorus sounds, sine for gooey vibrato, and square wave for rhythmic glitches and pitch jumps. The Rate and Amount controls have a huge range from subtle dimension to complete time warping madness. Or you can zero out the LFO to explore double-tracking effects, static comb filtering, and short delay.

The Mix control has a range from fully off to 100% wet, which lets you dial in subtle sounds or go all-in for true analog pitch vibrato. These settings are great for Leslie organ sounds or tape-like warble. The Tone control is even more useful here, as a way to sculpt the overall tone of your wet signal.

Finally, the CV jack rewards more intrepid sonic explorers with an even wider range of control. Its lush swirls, vocal comb filter sweeps, and metallic flourishes can be controlled with the on-board LFO, or articulated by your playing dynamics with our bi-directional, multi response envelope follower. By drawing from synthesizer-style architectures and elements of beloved vintage rack effects, Hawker has designed this modulator from the ground up to go where no classic flanger has gone before.

The AFG-1 flanger architecture uses a 256-stage MN3009 high-voltage BBD chip powered by an internal 15V power supply, to create an extremely short delay in the audio range of time. Adding this delayed signal back into the original signal forms a series of peaks and notches as harmonically related frequencies that constructively and destructively interfere. This is known as a comb filter. By moving this comb filter up and down over time, the AFG-1 creates the sound we know and love as flanging.

The AFG-1 includes all the features one expects from a flanger. Use the onboard LFO for impossibly slow whooshes or fast warbles. Our LFO has a true sine wave shape and a synthesizer-style exponential converter for a smooth, musical sweep over several octaves of delay time. This ensures the modulation is pitch symmetrical rather than Hz symmetrical. The Freq control behaves similarly to the Manual control on a typical flanger and sets the center point of the LFO to dial in the perfect sweep range. The VCA controlled Feedback routes the delayed signal back upon itself to enhance the intensity of the comb filter or create oscillating tuned pitches at maximum settings. And finally, the Drive control adds rich saturation with increasingly sculpted tone and harmonics to add to the flanger sound.

What truly sets the AFG-1 apart is the Envelope control. This is very rarely found in pedal format flangers and hearkens back to classic “whooshless” rackmount flangers of the 70s. Featuring both positive and negative control and three different attack/release settings, the envelope detector allows you to animate the peaks of the comb filter entirely with your playing dynamics. From a practical standpoint this means the flanger modulation stays out of the way and does not make the sometimes undesired background whoosh during quiet passages or when not playing. Moderate settings add mild tonal emphasis or harmonic-enhancing shimmers. At higher settings you can dial in gorgeous sweeps, surprisingly funky vocal filter throbs, lo-fi aliasing, or robotic chaos — all controlled by your playing.

In addition, we have included a unique three-position phase toggle switch to set the relative phase of the delay and feedback signals, which changes the texture of the comb filter. Airplane mode produces classic flanger sounds while Swirl mode is warm, subtle, and textural. Lastly, the Phase setting produces deep bass or hollow, vocal sounds reminiscent of a talk box. Combine this toggle with different Feedback settings to unlock all sorts of new textures that you’d never expect from a traditional flanger.

And to truly go to new bounds, and give you more control of your playing, the AFG-1 Expression jack enables expression pedal or control voltage functionality. Not only can you control 4 of the knob parameters, but it also expands the range of each knob above and below their maximum limits. Want to push the Freq control to the shortest time possible or drive the AFG-1 deep into self oscillation? With an expression pedal, that’s no problem.

Using its expansive array of controls, the AFG-1 goes where few flangers dare to tread. Unlike traditional flangers that use a linear additive modulation, we use an exponential bi-polar modulator for smooth volt/octave time and frequency shifts that stay musical over the entire sweep range. Our Amount also adds LFO bi-directionally to the FREQ control rather than pans between like a traditional Flanger.

Drive: The Drive knob is a tweak of the drive circuit of our ADG-1 pedal. It provides character, rich saturation and tone shaping as the drive is increased. This generates extra harmonics to work with when combined with comb filtered flanging tones. At about 9:00 the drive is unity gain, with a transparent and flat response. As gain is increased it becomes increasingly saturated and sculpted, providing nearly 36dB of total gain with a subtle midrange emphasis.

Envelope: The Envelope follower knob provides a means of articulated “Whooshless” dynamic flanging.
