Synthesiser keyboards are the workhorses of electronic music production and performance. They offer a vast sonic palette, allowing you to craft everything from lush pads and soaring leads to pulsating basslines and otherworldly textures. When choosing a synth keyboard, considering how you'll use it is key. Here's a breakdown to help you find the perfect fit for your creative space:

Studio Powerhouses:

  • Workstation Synths: These feature a wide range of sounds onboard, including pianos, organs, strings, drums, and of course, classic synth tones. Additionally, they often come with built-in sequencers, arpeggiators, and effects processors, making them ideal for composing and arranging music in the studio. Popular choices include Korg Kronos, Yamaha Montage, and Roland Fantom series.
  • Virtual Analog Synths: Capture the warmth and character of classic analog synths with a modern twist. These synths recreate the analog synthesis process digitally, offering a familiar playing experience with the flexibility of digital controls. Moog Subsequent 37, Sequential Prophet Rev2, and Dreadbox Nymphes are some well-regarded options.
Performance Synths: Prioritise portability, user-friendly controls, and high-quality sounds optimised for live performance. They often feature a streamlined interface with knobs and sliders for on-the-fly sound tweaking, and may even have built-in vocoders for expressive vocal manipulation. Popular choices include Roland Juno-DS series, Yamaha MODX, and Korg KRONOS Stage.

Additional Features to Consider:

  • Number of Keys: The number of keys (typically ranging from 25 to 88) impacts playing feel and range. A larger keyboard allows for more expansive playing, while a smaller footprint might be preferable for portability.
  • Polyphony: This refers to the number of notes a synth can play simultaneously. More polyphony allows for complex chords and layering of sounds.
  • Aftertouch & Modulation: These performance controls allow for more expressive playing by letting you dynamically control aspects of the sound with your touch or breath.
Finding the Perfect Synth:
  • No single synth is perfect for everything. Identify your needs (studio vs live performance, desired sounds) and explore options within your budget. Many stores offer demo keyboards so you can try them out before you buy. The most important factor? That the synth inspires you to create!
