My new Taylor 724ec has shot to the top of my best guitar purchase list ever (with a 2018 Martin HD-35 being a very close second and a Martin D-28 12 string being third). I've wanted a Taylor for ages, so when Turramurra Music brought in a couple of the 50th anno models I'd been looking at online, I jumped at the chance to play them. A 314ce builders edition was out in front as a probable purchase when Dean brought over a (considerably more expensive) 724ce Koa top, back and sides model for comparison. The bastard. From the first strum, I was enamored by its tone and its superb action. Acoustically, it was warm, rich and balanced while the bass could be described as tight, without having the boom of a larger instrument. Finger picking notes were crisp and defined, while digging in with a pick livened the attack without the guitar yelling at me. However, I was still a tiny bit concerned about whether this guitar with its subtle bass would be overwhelmed in a live performance context, so Dean plugged it in to a PA. Within seconds, I was grinning like a cheshire cat. The sound coming from the ES2 pickup was simply extraordinary. I can now confirm that it sits sweetly in a live mix and is very stable with feedback. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful guitars I have ever seen, with the build quality and appointments being typical of a top of the range custom shop model in my opinion. It is also the only acoustic guitar I have ever played whose action was perfect straight…
