PA speakers, or Public Address speakers, are the workhorses of live sound. They amplify the sound from microphones, instruments, and other audio sources, ensuring your performance reaches the entire audience with clarity and power.

Types of Live Sound PA Speakers:

  • Full-Range Speakers: These speakers reproduce the entire audible frequency spectrum, from low bass to high treble. They are a good choice for smaller venues or simpler setups where you don't need separate subwoofers.
  • Main Speakers (PA Mains): These are the main speakers that project the bulk of the sound to the audience. They typically come in various sizes and power ratings, with larger and more powerful speakers suited for bigger venues.
  • Floor Monitors (Wedge Monitors): Angled speakers positioned on stage for the performers to hear themselves and the overall mix clearly. They are crucial for proper stage monitoring, allowing performers to play in sync and adjust their playing based on what they hear.
  • Subwoofers: Dedicated speakers designed to reproduce low-frequency sounds (bass) that full-range speakers may not handle effectively. Subwoofers add depth and punch to the overall sound, especially important for music genres with a strong bass presence.

Passive Speakers:

  • More affordable option.
  • Require a separate power amplifier to function. The amplifier boosts the weak signal from the mixer to a level that can drive the speakers.
  • Offer more flexibility in amplifier selection, allowing you to choose an amp that matches your specific power needs and sonic preferences.
  • Generally larger and heavier than powered speakers.

Powered Speakers:

  • All-in-one design with built-in amplifiers.
  • Simpler setup process, as you only need to connect the mixer to the powered speakers.
  • Often more compact and lightweight than passive speakers, making them easier to transport.
  • May not offer the same level of power or sonic customization as separate amplifiers.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Live Sound PA Speakers:

  • Venue Size and Audience Capacity: Larger venues require more powerful speaker systems to fill the space with sufficient sound pressure level.
  • Type of Performance: The musical style being performed will influence the speaker choice. Bass-heavy music may benefit from subwoofers, while acoustic performances may be well-served by full-range speakers.
  • Portability: If you frequently transport your PA system, consider the size and weight of the speakers. Portable PA systems are often smaller and lighter, making them easier to set up and tear down.
  • Power Output: The speaker's power rating indicates its ability to produce sound pressure level. More powerful speakers are needed for larger venues or louder performances.
  • Coverage Angle (Dispersion): This refers to the horizontal and vertical spread of the sound from the speaker. Choose a speaker with a dispersion pattern that effectively covers the intended audience area.
  • Budget: Live sound PA speaker systems can range from affordable options for small gigs to high-powered, professional-grade systems for large venues.

Additional Tips:

  • Speaker Placement: Proper positioning of speakers is crucial for achieving even sound distribution and minimising feedback. Experiment with different placements to find the optimal setup for your venue.
  • Mixing and EQ: A good quality mixer and proper use of equalisation (EQ) are essential for shaping the sound and ensuring a clear and well-balanced mix for the audience.
  • System Expansion: Many PA speaker systems allow for adding additional speakers or subwoofers as your needs grow. Consider a system that can be scaled up as your performance requirements evolve.
