When recording Bon Scott in the 1970s, producers Harry Vanda and George Young were looking for a microphone that could capture the full power and raw intensity of his voice while allowing it to sit perfectly within AC/DC’s loud, guitar-driven arrangements.

Their choice was the Neumann U 47 fet, which became the primary vocal microphone on early AC/DC albums, including Let There Be Rock. Its ability to handle extremely high sound pressure levels without compromise made it ideally suited for Scott’s aggressive vocal style.

Harry Vanda recalls that the U 47 fet allowed Bon’s voice to “sit best with the guitars” while delivering exactly the sonic character they were striving for.

A MODERN CLASSIC

Introduced in 1972 as a solid-state successor to the original tube-based U 47, the U 47 fet quickly became a studio standard for rock vocals and loud instruments. By replacing the vacuum tube with FET electronics, Neumann created a microphone with dramatically increased headroom while retaining the authoritative midrange character associated with the U 47 name.
